USA Today: Flood-piled silt poses shipping threat along Mississippi

ABOARD THE GENMAR MINOTAUR — Plying the mouth of the Mississippi River is usually a routine, enjoyable experience for crews of commercial ships, the end of a long haul from a faraway port.

But on a recent afternoon, the crew of the Genmar Minotaur, a 797-foot oil tanker ferrying 586,000 barrels of oil from Venezuela, keeps a keen eye on their navigation instruments and the fingers of land ahead of them, as the tanker slowly maneuvers from the Gulf of Mexico into the river's mouth.
