Wetlands
The Mississippi River Delta is a precious resource and its wetlands plays a vital role our country and the Bar Pilots make it their mission to protect this natural resource.
- It is home to hundreds of species of birds, fish, mammals, insects, and crustaceans
- It is a front line for hurricane surge protection
- Through the heart of this wetland, flows the main river channel that is the conduit to the port system
The Bar Pilots have been protecting this precious resource by providing safe passage for maritime commerce for 150 years. Our 24 hour per day presence and constant monitoring of the ever changing conditions has help us continue protecting this precious resource.
Currently, we are working with several governmental agencies and public advocates to ensure that the maximum use of dredged material from the river can be used for wetland restoration, a benefit encouraged and supported by the Bar Pilots.
